| Letters -- September 2007 Ascendo and YG Acoustics September 27, 2007 Editor, In your review of the Ascendo System M-S, when comparing that speaker to the YG Acoustics Kipod, you state, “These two speakers are unlikely to appeal to the same listener -- they’re almost polar opposites.” Having heard both I would generally concur with your assessment. However, both speakers are much higher-resolution devices than many of the expensive speakers on the market, and since both are dynamic designs, both of reasonable size, and both somewhat accurate in terms of their engineering, they might initially appeal to the same buyer. Once heard, a listener won’t mistake them, which is the point I think you meant to communicate. Nice article overall. Your observations are very astute. Tom Pimental A speaker for "financial mortals" September 12, 2007 Editor, I enjoyed your review of the Rockport Mira loudspeaker. It takes some courage and integrity to both appreciate and honestly report on a component's "world class" performance despite its (relative to other state-of-the-art designs) modest cost. I have never heard a Rockport speaker, but your review has greatly piqued my interest. I am curious to learn if you feel it is a difficult load for an amplifier or not. I have push-pull tube amps of about 25 class-A watts. You have auditioned many of the "cost no object" speaker designs, and I would think you are now somewhat well calibrated to the overall market. Your review strongly suggests to me that the Mira, on performance alone, significantly holds its own with most of these other designs. If that is true, that is an amazing and wonderful result for the music-loving consumer. Maybe state of the art, for the first time in a long time with speakers, is now within reach of financial mortals. David You’ve summed up my feelings quite well. There is no question that the Mira is a fabulous speaker that plays significantly above its price range. Regarding your question, my understanding is that the Mira will work with your amplifiers provided that they can drive a 4-ohm load. The reactive phase angle is benign, I’m told -- a technical trait purposefully designed in for wide applicability in varying systems….Jeff Fritz "...the lesser SACD format…” September 6, 2007 To Rad Bennett, Finally, someone is not afraid to admit he likes DVD-Audio better than the lesser SACD format (“SACD: Not Corpse but Phoenix”). Most of the people in the high-end industry must be feeling pretty stupid. It looks like their golden ears weren't so golden after all. Now that we know which format is better, will it make any difference? Of course not! How could an "audio aficionado" ever admit he or she was wrong? Just one of many articles I've read on the almost-dead formats -- it's a shame for all of us that the better format didn't win. Thanks for your courage and honesty. Vince
