Letters -- May 2007 Kipod bass May 28, 2007 Editor, Regarding your YG Acoustics Kipod review: Getting adequate bass from an 8 driver is quite a feat. Wouldnt YG Acoustics, in your opinion, be better off using a larger, more powerful driver? I have trouble with the price tag versus that 8 woofer. Maybe its a hang-up of mine. Comments? Shiraz To answer your first question: yes, they would be better off with a larger woofer for the bass section. They would also be better off with a larger enclosure so that they could cut down on the amount of EQing needed to force the low-bass extension they get from that 8 driver. But if all of these aspects of the design were to change, then it would not be the same compact speaker that it is. The Kipod does have tradeoffs in absolute loudness capability in the bass, no question, but that is ostensibly why YG Acoustics makes the larger speakers in their line -- albeit at higher prices, too .Jeff Fritz Your "Opinion" May 11, 2007 Editor, In your Ultra Audio Opinion this month, you state, I dont believe that everything that matters in audio can be surmised from looking at a frequency-response chart. I think youre right, but there is ample evidence that much information can be gathered by doing just this -- which you also state. I do wish the objectivists and subjectivists would come together and declare that it takes listening and measurements to determine the worth of a component. The constant battle of wits, each declaring the others methods skewed, is tiresome and unnecessary. I enjoyed your article, and I look forward to more from you as you certainly are more balanced than most reviewers. Bradley Thank you for the note. I also think that most audiophiles appreciate both the objective data and subjective experiences. Why not have more information as opposed to less? If you were buying a car youd look at the specs and reviews, and also drive it around the block a few times, right?...Jeff Fritz Gryphon Mirage? May 2, 2007 You have mentioned on several occasions that you really like Gryphon equipment. Do you know about their new Mirage preamplifier? It looks radically different than anything else on the market. Will you get it in for review? Thank you for your expert writing. Ashan I have been in contact with Gryphon about the new Mirage, and am currently attempting to schedule it for review. I will be traveling to Munich, Germany for the High End 2007 show in a couple of weeks, and I hope to confirm the availability of a unit for Ultra Audio. So check back with me around the end of May, and hopefully I will be listening to the Mirage at that point .Jeff Fritz
